Creative is the Real Performance Lever.

Not bidding. Not targeting. Not budget allocation. The single biggest thing moving your numbers is the one most teams treat as an afterthought.

▲ Creative × Data

Here is a conversation I have had more times than I can count. A brand comes in convinced their performance problem is a media problem. The bids are wrong. The targeting is off. The budget is in the wrong place. So we look. And almost every single time, the media is fine. The creative is the problem.

Here’s why that keeps happening. Over the last few years, the platforms have quietly automated away most of the levers marketers used to pull. Bidding is machine-optimised. Targeting has collapsed into broad audiences that the algorithm sorts better than any planner can. Budget allocation is increasingly the platform’s decision, not yours. One by one, the knobs got taken away.

"When everyone has the same media engine, the creative is the only edge left."

What’s left — the one input the platform cannot optimise for you — is the creative. The idea. The hook in the first two seconds. The reason a human being stops scrolling and feels something. That is now the highest-leverage variable in the entire funnel, and most teams still treat it as the thing you do after the “real” strategy is done.

The numbers don’t lie about where the lift comes from

When we rebuilt the creative approach for a national F&B brand — leading with authenticity and ritual instead of discounts — the performance didn’t improve because we found a smarter bid. It improved because the creative reduced the resistance to buying. Better creative made the same media dramatically more efficient.

−30%Drop in CPA over six months as creative equity compounded

None of those numbers came from the media team getting cleverer with the auction. They came from making work that people actually wanted to watch. The ROAS is a downstream effect of a creative decision. It almost always is.

What ‘creative as performance’ actually means

The uncomfortable truth

The brands with the best performance metrics are almost always the ones with the strongest creative instincts. Creative is the #1 performance lever — not bidding, not targeting, not budget. The thing that moves the numbers is the thing the algorithm can’t teach you: how to make people feel something.

So the next time performance dips, don’t start with the media plan. Start with the work. Watch the first two seconds of every ad you’re running and ask, honestly, whether you’d stop scrolling for it. If the answer is no, you’ve found your problem — and no amount of bid tuning is going to fix it.
